TALES of SURVIVAL

As a survivor of the July 25, 1956 shipwreck of the Andrea Doria, I am eager to share my harrowing experiences and answer any questions!

  1. Being a survivor of the Andrea Doria was only the beginning.
In 1956, I was returning from a year's study in Paris at the Sorbonne. I was a passenger on the Andrea Doria with a classmate, but we did not share the same cabin because we changed our passage at the last minute. We decided to cross in July rather than take our original passage on the Andrea Doria in August.
My rescue ship was the Stockholm, the other ship involved in the collision. I never saw my friend on deck while the ship was sinking. I only found out that she was safe when I landed in New York City.
My family had already come to New York from Syracuse, NY to meet me. They did not know if I was alive until they saw me disembarking from the Stockholm, which was the last ship to arrive at the NY harbor, because I never turned my name in on the Stockholm to be radioed to NY on the survivors' list. I figured my parents and family would know I was safe because I knew I was safe.
